God & Love

Another great polar bear story by Lisa Tawn Bergren. I am on a mission to collect all the books with the "God Gave Us" title. God Gave Us Love is a very cute story! It really explains to children what love is, why God gave it to us, and why God will always love us. MY favorite page in the book says the following, ' "God shows us His love through our friends and family. But most of all," Grandpa said, "we know God loves us because He sent His Son to save us, to help us make good choices and forgive us when we don't. Because God loves us that much, we won't ever be separated from Him." ' I can already tell you this will be a favorite with my kids.

Loving Our Kids

How We Love Our Kids: The 5 Love Styles of Parenting is full of great information. We were all brought up differently. Therefore, we all know love as something different. We can transform our kids by changing certain things about how we love.

In This Book:
*Identify which of the 5 love styles you have.
*Discover surprising dynamics that shape your parenting.
*Get rid of your "buttons" so your kids can't push them.
*Create a close connection with your kids that will last a lifetime.
*Learn the 7 gifts every child needs.

I love the Parent Toolbox in the back of the book. I gained a lot of knowledge from this book and I am grateful for it.

The Homeschool Experiment -A Review-

What They Say:

Julianne Miller feels God nudging her to homeschool her three children. The only problem is, she has no idea what she’s doing. Julianne was her high school valedictorian, graduated from college with honors, and had a successful career in the business world. How hard could first grade possibly be?
Her plans and schedules all look so good on paper. But when it comes to avoiding her preschooler’s public meltdowns, keeping her toddler alive and in a clean diaper, and getting through the morning without everyone dissolving in tears, Julianne is thinking she might not be quite up to the task.
Can her co-op friends help her before she loses her mind or ruins her children for good? Or should she give up this crazy idea and prove her mother-in-law right?
With refreshing humor and honesty, Charity Hawkins offers moms encouragement in their noble work at home, a chance to laugh at the moments only a mom would understand, and a reminder to cherish those gifts right under their roofs— those wild, irrational, precious people—their own children. And though the book deals with homeschooling, it addresses the larger question, “What happens when you feel called to do something that seems entirely too big for you?”
Todd Wilson, “The Familyman,” a popular homeschool speaker and author, wrote the forward for the book. “It’s not always pretty… and that’s why my wife likes this book. It tells it like it is and serves as a reminder that she’s not alone in her struggles and frustrations. When you read it from someone else’s perspective, it helps you to laugh and see things more clearly.”
“This book was written for homeschooling moms.” Hawkins says, “They can read it, laugh, cry, and be encouraged. Then, they can have a great discussion with their friends—there’s a homeschool group study guide included in the back—or pass it on to a younger mom coming along behind them. It’s the perfect first book for those just starting out. It’s sort of like living in the house of a homeschool family for a year. You see the daily challenges, but also the beautiful rewards.”

My Take On It:
If I didn't know any better I'd say author, Charity Hawkins, was peeking in my windows and following me around. How does she know so much about my life?! I can so relate to Julianne Miller in this story. We have a similar situation in our household with an older son, 4 yr old child, and a younger one. Daniel reminded me so much of my son.
Jules, with the encouragement from her husband, decides she is going to homeschool her children.  She wonders if this is the right thing to do for her children. She goes through the whole "which curriculum do I buy?" thing which hit close to home. I got opinions from everyone about what they liked best. I ended up getting books from a few different curriculums.
She made a schedule, she fixed the classroom up very nicely, and she had everything ready to start school. Great plans and ideas were thought out. Then school starts....yes, been there and done that! Things don't work out as great as they did in her head. After a few months she starts wondering if maybe she wasn't cut out to homeschool. HELLO!!! Doesn't every homeschooling mom have these thoughts at least once during this period?! I know I did a few times. Like Julianne, I thought we would get so far behind and my son wasn't going to be as smart as all the kids his age that go to a regular school. I still struggle sometimes, but thank God for His peace!
We started off our school year with a schedule and a couple months into it we had a whole new way of keeping track of our work and the ways it got done. It turned from "this is what we are going to do every day" to "this is what we got done today."
One of my favorite paragraphs in the book, "Homeschooling is a lot like my garden. It's messy. My method seems haphazard. I am learning as I go. It rarely turns out exactly as I planned and the results are unpredictable. At some point along the way, I feel like a failure. But somehow the roots go down deep; the tender plants grow strong. And every single spring, every single summer, I am awed by the harvest God brings." This little paragraph really spoke to me. It may be because we are in the process of growing our garden, I don't know. I just really relate to this!
I recommend this book to any and every homeschooling family. You are not alone out there. We all go through some of the same things. This really brings everything close to home.
A little testimony from me: I started doing some child care for a friend and was starting to worry about my son's homeschooling. I decided I would enroll him in a virtual school so he wouldn't fall behind. That lasted a whole 2 months. While I was reading this book I got convicted! Well, maybe convicted is a strong word to use. I just knew I had given up and I was wrong in my decision. I didn't seek God first before I chose to do this. How could I do this to my son? He wasn't loving it after the 1st week because we had so much makeup work to do. I stopped doing the childcare and decided we were going back to homeschooling our way. My son woke up early the next day excited about school. "When are we doing school today?!" That just helped me and confirmed that what I did was the right thing. Thank God for this book that helped me realize my children weren't going to suffer from lack of knowledge if we didn't do "school" EVERY day, or get to every subject I have planned. This is a very encouraging novel. I received at just the right moment. God knew I needed this.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Charity Hawkins is a pen name, because the real author wrote candidly about her family’s life and wants to protect their privacy, because she doesn’t want to be famous, and because no one can pronounce or spell her real name. She does actually exist, however, and lives with her husband and three actual children in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They are in their fourth year of homeschooling.

Three Hearts

This documentary really pulls on the hearts strings. Billy Graham's granddaughter, Cissie Lynch, does an internship with Samaritan's Purse program "Children's Heart Project." I didn't know Samaritan's Purse had other programs! This project is not only providing medical attention to these children who can't get it in their own country, but they are providing the spiritual aspect as well. These patients and their families get to hear about Jesus! We need to keep these families and this program in our prayers. This is a project I can support! Very inspiring video!

The Beautiful Wife Study

Description:
There was a time when author Sandy Ralya’s marriage was in trouble. She needed help but she was afraid to ask for it. At the time, she didn’t know that hundreds of other wives were struggling with the same issues she was. Though Sandy eventually sought guidance from godly mentors and Christian counselors, other women remain silent. Many churches lack ministries and resources to reach out and help these women.
The Beautiful Wife uses these inspiring stories along with biblical principles to guide and encourage any wife looking for God's best in her marriage. The Beautiful Wife answers serious questions women have about their roles as wives. Discussing everything from romance and money to beauty, communication, and sex, Sandy challenges women to open up and share their journeys so that together they can see God's plan for their marriages. "It is my passion to help women discover God's heart for their marriage, just as the other women helped me," writes Sandy. "When women share with each other the details of their journeys with God as wives, it's a beautiful thing indeed." The Beautiful Wife has two companion resources - Prayer Journal and Mentor's Guide.

The Beautiful Wife: Focused on Christ, Fulfilled in Marriage came with a mentor's guide and a journal. So not only is this for personal use, but can be used in group studies as well. This book does not speak of physical beauty. This is to enrich marriages around the globe. I like the fact that the author, Sandy Ralya, first tells us to turn to God. We know we should be doing this in every aspect of our life. Sometimes we are turning to Him for everything except our marriage!
I loved every chapter I read, but the one about romance really stuck with me. I even quoted the part about us not being our husbands' mother as my Facebook status once.

I will forever remember TRACE

Trust instead of control
Respect instead of demean
Appreciate instead of criticize
Confer confidence instead of doubt
Expose vulnerability instead of defensiveness

This book covers everything from thoughts on sex to managing money. This is a great help book for women for our marriages. It has changed the way I think about a lot of things, including my hubby.

I am so glad this set included a Prayer Journal....very important! Every chapter in the book coincides with the prayer journal. It helps to really get involved with your reading. Also helps to  get us in the Word of God and more active in our prayer life concerning our marriage.

The Mentor's Guide is only necessary when completing this study in a group session. It will be a great help! Each chapter starts with a prayer, an introduction to the lesson, and then discussion preparations. There are a couple more sections that keep you involved with your group and lessons as well.

If you are interested in purchasing this book please go here and get it for a great price at amazon.com.

I received this book from Kregel Publications for the purpose of my honest review and blog tour.

Promise Me This- A Review

We say we would lay down our life for loved ones as Jesus did for us. Would you do it for your friend? Maybe someone you've only met just months before? Owen was someone who was the image of Christ on earth. He dreams of fulfilling his father's dream and moving him and his sister to live with their aunt and uncle on American soil.
He proceeded to put his sister in a boarding school while he made his way to America to start a new life and make his family's gardens profitable. Owen was a master gardener like his father and had created many new flowers to take to America with him. Once they had enough money he would immediately send for his sister. Annie did not like that plan, but she went along with it. Weeks before Owen was to leave he came upon a young man, Michael, sleeping under a tarp that was meant for the flower beds. The boy was startled, hungry, and dirty but Owen was very friendly. He shared his lunch and hired him to help. They became very good friends.
Michael was orphaned as a young lad and had been abused his whole childhood by his drunk uncle. He and his little sister were eventually sold to two different men. He can never forget his little sister screaming for him as she was carried off by a stranger. Michael didn't know what love was, or that he could actually have a friend who cared about him. Owen was a gift from God, although Michael doesn't realize that until later.
It came time for Michael to leave on the "unsinkable" Titanic. Owen worked it out with the garden owner that Michael would take his place. Michael was beaten by his uncle the previous night with his drunk friends throwing in a kick or two. That morning he found a boarding pass in the gutter and did what he could to look the part of the pass information. IT WORKED! He was aboard the Titanic.
We all know what happened to that beautiful and majestic ship. Let me just tell you, keep those tissues nearby while reading this book.
Annie goes through quite the ordeal after she learns about her brother's fate. She was in need of much healing and deliverance from her bitterness and hatred. She was turning into her Aunt Eleanor and that was not something she wanted.
This is such a great story of God's provision. Life might not be awesome and joyous all the time, but that doesn't mean God has abandoned us! We have hope in Jesus. Throughout the story the main characters strengthen their relationship with God. I highly recommend this book if you like historical fiction. Although this could have very well been the story of someone's life back then. Just when you think you have things figured out something else happens. Cathy Gohlke can really write a great story. Hate, loss, bitterness, hopelessness, doubt, sacrifice, happiness, love, forgiveness, and hope....it's all in this book. I wanted to read this book for the historical factor, but got so much more out of it.

The World of Science and Animals

It was a great blessing to receive these two books. The two books are from My Father's World Christian curriculum. You can actually purchase your copy of these books at a better price through My Father's World rather than Amazon.com. They are listed for 4th-8th graders, but I think any school aged child would enjoy these books.

The 1st book The World of Animals has lots of good information from little protists up to huge mammals. My kids enjoyed the bug section most because they're not as scary when you are learning about them in a book. It's amazing how much God has created. We can't forget about those little organisms.

The 2nd book World of Science is full of fascinating scientific facts. My son is learning about atoms and the Table of Elements and all that good stuff in his virtual science class. I was grateful to have a biblical sound science book to turn to for us to learn more in.  These books are really awesome!

I received both of these books from NLP for my honest review.
